A note on how these packs work

Alongside school,
not instead of it.

Millfield's catering provides everything a student needs at mealtimes. What we offer sits either side of that: targeted performance nutrition for your young athlete in the hours around their training sessions, prepared with them specifically in mind and delivered to their boarding house.

Before a session the goal is easily digested, well-timed fuel, something that prepares the body without weighing it down. Immediately after, the goal is prompt protein and electrolyte replenishment to begin recovery before the next meal. Both are windows where thoughtful, sport-specific nutrition makes a genuine difference to how your child performs and recovers.

Every pack is supplied ambient, stable at room temperature, no refrigeration required. This is not a compromise. It is how athletes at every serious level fuel around their training.

Performance Nutrition

The science behind the packs.

Each pack in this range has been put together with the specific demands of the sport and the individual young athlete in mind. These notes explain the thinking behind each one.

Aquatic Performance

Swimming

Pre-Session

A swimmer training seriously is an athlete in the fullest sense, the demands of double sessions, early starts and sustained output in the water place real physiological pressure on a young body. Food eaten too close to training causes genuine physical discomfort in the water, yet under-fuelling leads to fatigue mid-set when glycogen stores drop. The two to three hour window before training is deliberate, long enough for comfortable digestion, close enough to maintain blood glucose levels. The oat and chia base provides slow-release carbohydrate that sustains energy across a long pool session. Grated apple adds natural fructose for a gentle early energy lift, while cinnamon is widely associated with supporting steady energy release throughout. Sunflower seed butter on crackers slows carbohydrate release further, keeping energy consistent from warm-up to final lap.

The Pre-Match Snack

For swimmers training twice a day, the mid-session snack is about maintaining performance in the second session without compromising comfort in the water. The contents are deliberately easy to digest and light enough to sit comfortably before getting back in the pool. This matters more for swimmers than almost any other sport. The snack is designed to be eaten 60 to 90 minutes before the second session.

Recovery

Swimming is deceptive, athletes emerge from the water without feeling sweaty, but mineral and electrolyte loss across a serious training session is significant. Magnesium and iodine are the specific focus here: magnesium for muscle recovery, iodine because pool environments are known to affect thyroid function over time. Coconut water addresses sodium and potassium. The recovery pack is built around what swimming actually depletes rather than a generic post-exercise formula.

Field Performance

Football

Pre-Session

A football player at county or academy level is running harder, reacting faster and making more decisions per minute than most adults ever will on a sports pitch. The second half is where all of that effort catches up, slower reactions, reduced sprint capacity, poorer decision-making. These can often reflect depleted glycogen stores and inadequate pre-match fuelling. The oat base provides the complex carbohydrate needed to top up glycogen stores fully before kick-off. Banana adds fast-releasing natural sugars alongside potassium, the same combination used at elite professional level. Cinnamon slows carbohydrate absorption, preventing the energy spike and subsequent crash that can leave a player feeling flat in the opening twenty minutes when first impressions on the pitch matter most.

The Pre-Match Snack

A footballer who has run hard in the first half arrives at half-time with glycogen stores meaningfully depleted. The snack pack is timed for this moment, or for between matches at tournament level where two or three games may be played in a day. What goes in at half-time needs to be fast, palatable and easy on the stomach. At tournament level, getting this window right is often the difference between a player who performs consistently across the day and one who fades in the third game.

Recovery

The cramping a footballer experiences the day after a match is rarely pure dehydration, it reflects sodium-potassium imbalance alongside depleted glycogen. The recovery pack addresses both simultaneously: coconut water and biltong for electrolyte replacement, chickpeas and oatcakes for glycogen rebuild. The combination bridges efficiently to the next canteen meal without overfuelling.

Field Sport Performance

Hockey

Pre-Session

Hockey at county or academy level places extraordinary physical demands on a young player. The combination of sustained aerobic running, explosive acceleration and the upper body demands of stick work makes it one of the most complete athletic challenges in school sport, and one that most sports nutrition programmes simply do not account for properly. The oat and chia base provides the complex carbohydrate needed for sustained output across a seventy-minute match, while cranberries add antioxidant support specifically relevant to upper body exertion. The pack's slow-release base prevents the energy dip that compromises court speed in the final quarter.

The Pre-Match Snack

Hockey players at county or academy level often face back-to-back matches with limited recovery time between them. The snack pack addresses the hour or so between efforts. After a hard match, sweet foods can feel unappealing and heavy options worse. The snack is designed to be easy to eat, easy to digest, and effective enough to fuel the opening exchanges of the next match.

Recovery

Sodium and potassium replacement are the immediate priorities after a hockey match. The combination of coconut water, biltong and crackers addresses electrolyte balance while beginning muscle repair. At tournament level, players may compete in multiple matches across a single day, the recovery pack is designed to support rapid turnaround between efforts, not just overnight restoration.

Contact Sport Performance

Rugby

Pre-Session

Rugby players, particularly forwards, are among the most chronically under-fuelled athletes at junior level. The physical demands of the sport are enormous and the calorie requirement is significant, yet many players arrive at a match having eaten inadequately. The oat and chia base in hemp milk provides a substantially higher carbohydrate and protein load than standard oat milk, directly addressing the greater energy requirements of contact sport. Cacao adds magnesium relevant even before a match for muscle function and nerve signalling. Medjool dates provide fast-releasing natural sugars that top up blood glucose in the final hour before kick-off. This is a deliberately substantial pre-match kit.

The Pre-Match Snack

Rugby players need substantially more calories across a match day than almost any other school sport. The pre-match snack for rugby is calibrated accordingly, with a higher calorie density than other sports in this range. For players with two training sessions in a day, the snack pack bridges the gap effectively. A well-fuelled player recovers faster, absorbs training more effectively, and is less likely to pick up soft tissue injuries from fatigued movement.

Recovery

Rugby places significant demands on electrolyte and mineral reserves. Contact, scrums, tackles, collisions, places significant strain on muscle tissue, where protein and zinc both play a role in normal recovery. Pumpkin seed butter is included specifically for its zinc content. Pretzels provide fast sodium replenishment after contact sport. This is the most comprehensive recovery pack in the range outside of the endurance sports.

Court Performance

Netball

Pre-Session

A netball player at serious level is an athlete in every sense of the word, explosive, reactive and disciplined enough to maintain intensity across four demanding quarters without a moment to ease off. There is no gentle warm-up period in competitive play. Blood glucose needs to be stable and glycogen stores full before the opening quarter. The oat and chia base provides slow-release carbohydrate for sustained energy across four intense quarters. Apple flakes and cinnamon are a considered pairing: the natural fructose in apple fuels liver glycogen stores specifically, often overlooked in favour of muscle glycogen alone. Dried cranberries add a small antioxidant load that begins reducing inflammatory markers before play has even started.

The Pre-Match Snack

Netball is played in four quarters, and the quarter breaks represent the primary opportunity for quick-hit fuelling mid-match. The snack pack is structured around this reality: portions that can be eaten quickly, nothing that requires preparation, and a format manageable in two or three minutes at the side of the court. At tournament level, the iron consideration that runs through the whole day's nutrition is relevant here too.

Recovery

Female adolescent athletes are among the groups most commonly affected by iron deficiency in sport, causing fatigue that can be mistaken for lack of fitness. The iron thread runs through the entire day's nutrition in this pack: dried apricots and broad beans both support iron intake, while vitamin C from dried mango strips helps improve iron absorption, a pairing well established in sports nutrition and deliberately built into the recovery pack.

Sustained Performance

Cricket

Pre-Session

Cricket asks more of a young athlete's concentration than almost any other sport, sustained cognitive focus across an entire day, alongside physical demands that can shift from complete stillness to explosive sprinting with no warning whatsoever. The mental load alone is genuinely extraordinary. The oat and chia base with cacao and coconut provides slow-release carbohydrate alongside healthy fats, ideal for sustained energy across a full innings. Coconut's medium-chain triglycerides are metabolised differently to other fats, providing steady background energy that complements rather than competes with the carbohydrate load.

The Pre-Match Snack

Cricket is the sport where the snack is most important and most overlooked. A young cricketer who has not batted may spend three hours in the field without a match-related reason to eat, and then be called to bat at full intensity with no warning. The drinks break is the primary fuelling window. On a warm afternoon in the field, sweet foods become unappealing and anything heavy feels wrong. The cricket snack is deliberately steady and easy to eat, designed to maintain readiness rather than create a reaction.

Recovery

Cricket places unusual demands on concentration and sustained energy across a full day. The recovery pack combines fast-acting protein with steady carbohydrates, antioxidant-rich dried fruit, and coconut water for electrolyte replacement. The focus is not just on physical recovery but on cognitive restoration, the mental fatigue of a full day's cricket is real and often overlooked.

Explosive Precision Sports

Squash · Fencing · Tennis

Pre-Session

These three sports share a demanding combination of explosive physical output and sharp cognitive focus. Reaction times in fencing are measured in milliseconds. Squash is among the most physically intense racquet sports in existence. Tennis at competitive level can run for two hours or more. In all three cases, a single lapse in concentration, one lost point, one failed parry, one double fault, can shift the momentum of an entire match. Stable blood glucose supports both physical output and the mental sharpness these sports demand. Blueberries are specifically included for their association with cognitive function.

The Pre-Match Snack

In fencing and squash particularly, gaps between bouts are short and the next effort begins almost immediately. The snack needs to be absorbed quickly, sit lightly and cause no discomfort. The bliss balls in this pack carry their antioxidant profile into the snack window, providing a small but meaningful contribution to the cognitive sharpness that determines outcomes in these precision sports. Nothing heavy, nothing that demands attention away from the next bout.

Recovery

Competitors in squash and fencing may face multiple bouts in a single competition day, making recovery between efforts as important as preparation before the first. The pack prioritises complete protein alongside magnesium, widely associated with muscle relaxation, and antioxidant-rich dried berries that support recovery at a cellular level.

High Output Endurance

Rowing · Triathlon · Pentathlon

Pre-Session

These are among the highest calorie-burn sports in any school programme. A rower completing a serious ergo session has one of the highest calorie-burn rates of any school sport. A triathlete sustains elevated heart rate across three disciplines back to back. Modern pentathlon encompasses five disciplines, swimming, fencing, showjumping, running and shooting, in a single competition day, each requiring a completely different physical and mental state. The hemp milk base in the oat kit provides a higher protein and omega-3 profile than standard oat milk, appropriate for the sustained muscle demands of this group.

The Pre-Match Snack

At the calorie demands generated by rowing and triathlon, the snack pack is not optional. It is a structural component of the day's nutrition. The snack bridges the window between pre-session fuelling and recovery, preventing the energy drop that compromises form and increases injury risk in technically demanding sports. These athletes need fuel they can actually face eating between sessions, not anything that sits heavily or requires effort to get down. For modern pentathlon, maintaining consistent fuelling between five disciplines is one of the key performance variables within the athlete's own control.

Recovery

The nutritional challenge across this group is not just calorie replacement but managing the transition between disciplines and sustaining cognitive sharpness throughout. The recovery pack in this range is the most comprehensive outside rugby, reflecting the sustained output these sports require. Mineral recovery and high protein content address the demands of prolonged aerobic work.

Sprint & Distance

Athletics

Pre-Session

Whether your child sprints or runs distance, they are pushing their body to a level of output that very few young people ever attempt. Sprinters and distance runners share a track but almost nothing else nutritionally. A sprint athlete requires maximum explosive power from fully glycogen-loaded muscles, the race is over before fuel becomes a variable. What matters is readiness: fully fuelled, well-rested muscles and sharp neuromuscular function. A distance runner faces a sustained aerobic challenge where glycogen depletion is progressive and pacing of nutritional reserves matters. The sprint kit uses a lighter oat milk base; the distance kit uses hemp milk with milled seeds and medjool dates for maximum density and sustained release.

The Pre-Match Snack

For sprinters, the snack serves the warm-up window, eaten 45 to 60 minutes before their event. The last thing a sprinter needs at the start line is a heavy stomach. For distance runners, the timing is more variable, but the principle is the same: something light, easily digested and effective enough to maintain energy availability without diverting blood flow to digestion. At competition days where athletes race multiple times, the snack window between rounds becomes a meaningful nutritional intervention.

Recovery

Both sprint and distance athletes share a recovery pack that prioritises magnesium and iron alongside protein for muscle repair. Iron is of particular relevance for distance runners, where impact over time increases red blood cell turnover. The combination of biltong, broad beans and coconut water addresses protein, mineral replacement and hydration simultaneously.

Sustained Precision

Golf · Equestrian · Clay Shooting

Pre-Session

The mental discipline required to sustain precision across several hours is one of the most underestimated demands in school sport. These sports ask a young person to perform with complete composure for extended periods, a challenge that is genuinely difficult to train and harder still to maintain under pressure. An equestrian rider presents a unique nutritional consideration: they must maintain physical control and calm not just for their own performance but because the horse responds directly to their physical and emotional state. The coconut milk base provides medium-chain fats for sustained background energy, precisely what precision sports require.

The Pre-Match Snack

A golfer at the turn, an equestrian between rounds, a clay shooter midway through a card: each is in a window where eating too much disrupts focus and eating too little allows the drift that costs points. The snack pack is calibrated for exactly this. Modest in volume, low in digestive demand, designed to maintain the flat energy line that fine motor precision requires. Nothing heavy, nothing that draws attention away from the next shot.

Recovery

Recovery from precision sports is as much cognitive as physical. Zinc supports normal immune function and is included via pumpkin seed butter. Mineral recovery and sustained protein delivery support readiness for the following session without overstimulating a system that has been operating in a sustained, controlled state throughout.

Physical & Performance Demand

Dance

Pre-Session

Dance is one of the most physically and emotionally demanding disciplines a young person can pursue. The combination of sustained aerobic output, precise muscular control and the pressure of live performance creates a physiological challenge that rivals any team sport, and is significantly underestimated by almost everyone outside of it. Stable blood glucose supports not just physical output but the emotional regulation and mental clarity that performance demands. The iron thread runs through the day's nutrition, with dried apricots and mango strips chosen to support iron intake and absorption.

The Pre-Match Snack

Dance is unusual in that the snack window often falls close to performance, sometimes an hour or less before a show or examination. The dance snack pack avoids anything that sits heavily or causes discomfort during movement. The contents are chosen to be easy to manage backstage, with nothing that a dancer would feel anxious about eating before walking into the lights. The iron contribution from the snack supports the sustained output that a performance evening demands.

Recovery

Magnesium is found in foods widely associated with muscle relaxation and is commonly included in recovery nutrition for athletes in physically demanding disciplines. The iron pairing with vitamin C from dried mango supports iron absorption, a combination well established in sports nutrition and deliberately built into this pack. The performance dimension of dance adds a physiological stress beyond the physical, which the pack's antioxidant-rich elements help to address.

Expedition Fuelling

Outdoor Adventure

On the Move

Ten Tors, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, climbing and sailing represent a category of physical and mental challenge that sits entirely apart from everything else in school sport. These are not matches or sessions with a fixed end, they are sustained experiences that ask a young person to find something extra when conditions are hard, the distance is long and there is no substitute coming on. Cold, wind and technical demand significantly increase calorie burn beyond the physical movement alone. For all of these activities, nutrition is not an afterthought, it is part of the preparation.

The Pre-Match Snack

On a Ten Tors leg or a full D of E day, the snack pack becomes part of the rhythm of movement, eaten at a planned stop rather than in response to hunger. Hunger in sustained outdoor effort arrives after the depletion has already happened. The outdoor snack is designed to be eaten on the move if necessary: no preparation, no mess, nothing that requires sitting down. The bliss balls are specifically valuable here, calorie-dense and genuinely palatable after hours on a hill. A prepared athlete plans this stop into their day.

Why Ambient Matters

All expedition packs are supplied ambient, stable at room temperature with no refrigeration required. In the field, this is not a compromise. It is a necessity. The Firepot pouches used in the expedition range are designed for exactly this purpose, high calorie density, full nutrition, and preparation requiring only boiling water. Every component has been chosen for its portability, durability and nutritional contribution under genuine expedition conditions.

Preparation

The overnight oat kits are hand-assembled in small batches, prepared with each athlete and their sport in mind. Bliss balls are made by hand. All other products are carefully curated from trusted suppliers and may occasionally vary due to availability, every effort is made to substitute on a like-for-like basis without compromising the nutritional intent of the pack.

Allergens & Safety

Because our packs are prepared in a domestic kitchen handling a range of ingredients, we are not in a position to guarantee they are safe for anyone with a serious or life-threatening allergy. We ask that parents with children who have serious allergies please do not place an order, this decision is made with their child's safety in mind.

Every effort is made to ensure packs are prepared carefully and delivered in good condition. Any concerns, please get in touch and we will do our best to resolve them.

Environment

We aim to use recyclable and compostable packaging wherever possible and encourage customers to recycle responsibly. We are committed to reducing waste in our sourcing and preparation, and review our packaging choices regularly.
